We’ve got something truly special here. With a 46-year partnership with Martin Guitar and recognition as one of the select few Martin Custom Shop Expert dealers worldwide, we have exclusive access to some of the finest tonewoods in Martin’s inventory. This guitar is a standout example. Over the past few years, we’ve been fortunate to acquire several sets of the exceptionally rare Brazilian Kingwood. This marks the seventh guitar in our ongoing Kingwood Series — and the first to feature a set large enough for a dreadnought body. It’s a powerhouse. Easily the loudest guitar in our shop. When paired with High-Altitude European (Swiss) Spruce, the Kingwood doesn’t just deliver volume — it also produces a warm, sweet tone when played with a lighter touch. The tonal range is simply outstanding.
Kingwood (Dalbergia cearensis) is a rare and highly prized species of rosewood, known for its striking violet-purple hues accented by dark, almost black streaks. Native to Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, this exquisite tonewood has a rich history — earning its name from centuries of use by royalty in France, England, and across Europe. Celebrated for its beauty and durability, Kingwood has long been used in fine furniture, cabinetry, musical instruments, and luxury decorative pieces. It works exceptionally well on the lathe and polishes to a lustrous, natural sheen with minimal effort — a true testament to its timeless appeal.
This guitar delivers a bold, room-filling voice with exceptional clarity and richness. The Brazilian Kingwood back and sides contribute a dense, glassy resonance with strong low-end response and complex overtones, similar to traditional Brazilian Rosewood but with a slightly brighter edge and enhanced sustain. There’s a distinctive chime in the trebles and a refined, piano-like quality to the mids that adds articulation and depth to every note.
Paired with a high-altitude Swiss Spruce top — known for its responsiveness and stiffness-to-weight ratio — the guitar offers a crisp attack and excellent dynamic range. It responds effortlessly to both flatpicking and fingerstyle, producing warm, nuanced tones when played lightly, and opening up with authoritative projection under a heavier hand.
Overall, it’s a guitar with concert-level volume, rich harmonic content, and a touch-sensitive voice that remains clear and musical at every register. Ideal for players seeking a sophisticated dreadnought that combines traditional power with boutique tonal detail. In short, this one is spectacular. Your new family heirloom has arrived.
