Tobias Music & Taylor Guitars
Here at Tobias Music, we have been a proud dealer of Taylor Guitars in the Chicago area for over 30 years. Mom and Dad had the pleasure of meeting Bob Taylor and Kurt Listug at Chicago NAMM Show in the early 1980’s. It was Mom’s decision to bring the Taylor Guitars line into our small shop here in suburban Chicago. Her decision wasn’t just based on the quality of their guitars, but more so because Bob and Kurt were “just nice guys”.
We became one of Taylor Guitar’s original dealers, their company only 6-7 years old. No one can track down the original date, but best estimates are that we brought them in around 1981. Who would have imagined back then, that Taylor guitars would be leading the guitar industry some 30 years later ?
With bringing Taylor Guitars into our store at such an early date, we slowly began gaining the reputation as the “Taylor Guitar Store” here in the Chicago area. Though we have continued to be a traditional Mom and Pop shop, we have grown to be one of Taylor’s Top Dealers in the nation. We have been ranked annually in their Top 10 Independent Dealer list and Taylor holds a very special place in our history here at Tobias Music. Good decision Mom !!
We have had the pleasure of visiting the Taylor Guitars facility in El Cajon, CA many times over the years. We are blessed to have many close friends in the company. Quite honestly, Taylor Guitars are part of our Tobias Music family and they have played a big part in our success here for over 30 years. We also state emphatically, that they are a classy group top to bottom. Yes, they are building some of the finest guitars in the world. But they are a ridiculously awesome company to deal with on a daily basis. We are blessed to be a Taylor Dealer for the past 30+ years. You can shop with confidence when shopping for a Taylor Guitar.
About Taylor Guitars
Established in 1974 by Bob Taylor and Kurt Listug, Taylor Guitars has evolved into one of the world’s leading manufacturers of premium acoustic and electric guitars.
Headquartered in El Cajon, California, Taylor Guitars employs over 700 people and currently produces hundreds of guitars per day in its state-of-the-art factory complexes in both El Cajon and in Tecate, Mexico. The company maintains an active dealer network with Taylor guitars available in over 800 retail locations in North America and international distribution to 60 countries, including a distribution warehouse in the Netherlands.
Renowned for blending an innovative use of modern technology with a master craftsman’s attention to detail, Taylor guitars are widely considered the best sounding and easiest to play in the world. The company was a pioneer of the use of computer technology, lasers and other high-tech tools and machinery and today, Bob Taylor is widely recognized throughout the musical instrument industry as the visionary acoustic guitar manufacturer. The company’s innovations include, but are not limited to, the New Technology ® (NT) neck, the first major innovation in the construction of the acoustic guitar in the last 100 years; the award-winning Expression System® (ES) pickup, a groundbreaking, high-tech approach to amplifying an acoustic guitar; and the T5, the first, true hybrid acoustic and electric guitar that can produce amplified acoustic tones, full-crunch electric, and everything in-between with the flip of a five-way switch.
Outstanding playability, flawless craftsmanship, and stunning aesthetics are just a few of the reasons that many of today’s leading musicians make Taylor their guitar of choice. The company’s artist roster numbers in the thousands, and includes the likes of Taylor Swift, Prince, Jason Mraz, and Zac Brown, among many others.
This section will help you understand the different sizes of guitar bodies that Taylor Guitars offers. This will also help you decide what shape is best for you and your playing style.
Taylor Guitar’s smallest full-size body shape yields controlled overtones, so the sound won’t occupy a lot of sonic space. This is often a key consideration when other instruments are in the mix, such as a performance or recording environment, and it allows the guitar to be heard more clearly. The GC’s small, intimate size is also super comfortable for certain types of acoustic players, including solo fingerstylists. A perfect couch guitar, great for your solo gig. Well loved by our locals here in suburban Chicago.
This medium-sized body shape is a Taylor Guitars original, and one that helped establish the Taylor Guitars acoustic sound. Truly a perfect fit for all guitar playing styles. The popular GA makes for a versitile guitar that yeilds ample volume in response to light fingerpicking, and reacts to medium strumming and flatpicking with a clear. Balanced sound across the tonal spectrum. If you want a great all-purpose guitar, the Grand Auditorium (GA) is your Swiss Army Knife. Taylor’s 814ce and 314ce are two of the most popular guitars world-wide. Many of our friends here in the Downers Grove area have added one to their collection.
The GS yields a very full and rich acoustic voice, with great dynamic range. Compared to the GA, the GS shape has a bigger, rounder lower bout with a slightly wider “waste” area, and the bigger soundboard means more tonal output. Try a GS if you want a guitar with a robust low end, strong volume when strumming or flatpicking, and clear articulation in response to a light fingerpicking attack. If you want some added boom, this Taylor size is for you. Chicago area players love the Grand Symphony size.
One of the most traditional acoustic guitar shapes, the Dreadnought was refined by Taylor to blend the robust tone long associated with the boomy dreadnoughts of other guitar makers with a more balanced, articulate response. The Taylor Dreadnought (DN) sound is marked by a healthy midrange and brilliant treble notes. If you are a flatpicker or strummer who likes to dig in on lead or rhythm, the dreadnought should serve you well. Whether it’s the bluegrasser in you or you just prefer the traditional size, the Taylor Guitars Dreadnought is a great choice for Chicago area players.
The newest shape to join the Taylor line-up brings the boldest and riches tone to the table. The Grand Orchestra brings a more powerful voice and stands out as a more robust alternative to the Grand Symphony. The GO shape features a slightly bigger footprint and a deeper body which help produce a powerful low end response. The new Andy Powers designed bracing optimizes the movement of the soundboard for a more complex tone with incredible sustain. From all-out strumming attack to lighter fingerstyle arrangements, The GO might be the most versatile BIG guitar you ever played. Stop by our showroom in Downers Grove for a test drive.
The award-winning GS Mini is the perfect musical companion. Take it with you, or stay at home and play. Designed to mimic the big, bold sound of the Taylor Grand Symphony, the Mini’s compact size is not short on tone. The GS Mini is a comfortable travel sized guitar that packs the punch of his big brother. Big, full tone and totally fun to play. The GS-Mini is perfect for a life on the go (or on the couch). Real. Small. Taylor. So popular, we have sold close to 200 GS Mini’s to our Chicago area friends.
A ¾ sized dreadnought, the Baby Taylor was designed to produce tons of tone and volume for its smaller body. A slightly arched back provides strength and helps produce the deep, rich tone. The Baby Taylor is the perfect travel guitar or a great starter guitar for a younger player. We have three of these Baby Taylor’s in the Tobias Family collection. They ROCK.
The bigger brother of the Baby Taylor, this guitar is just shy of a full sized dread. Still good for travel because of its smaller and lightweight body, but still has outstanding tone and is very comfortable to play. The perfect guitar for the beach house or playing on the patio on a warm summer evening. Another Taylor model so popular here in Suburban Chicago that we have sold close to 200 of them.
